I live in China and shame is just an integral part of how society works, on every level, in every layer, for almost every relationship.

However, I do not see systemic changes here that will last. I still see people spit on the ground, or smoking with a face mask on (well, they pull it down), or not washing their hands. Wet markets will open back up, I am sure of it.

Old habits die hard; sometimes, as bad as it sounds, they must die off generationally.
